Our thoughts on Gary V.

Gary V is a popular chap in the online business world these days.

I imagine you’ve heard of him?

Honestly, there isn’t a day goes by where I don’t see him mentioned somewhere online.

I suppose that along is a testament to his success.

Whether you love him or hate him, he’s everywhere.

When we’re asked about him and his message it’s always in the context of…

“Do you think I should be on social media posting everything that happens in my life to market my business?”.

After all, that’s what he’s directly suggesting we do.

In my experience, all this kind of message does for business owners (on and offline) is three things:

1. Makes us feel guilty.

2. Makes us feel like if we aren’t working until midnight every night, we aren’t trying hard enough.

3. Overwhelms us even with the thought of posting on social media that often.

In short, we don’t agree and this isn’t what we advocate our students do.

Here’s what we suggest instead:

🚨Know your numbers🚨

Put it this way, if your content gets 1000s of clicks and likes but you can’t actually convert that into revenue, it’s pointless.

You can’t pay your mortgage with the views on your Snapchat story.

Content is important but it has to serve as part of a larger strategy.

Before you even think about plastering social media channels with marketing and videos, build a conversion mechanism.

Content builds awareness and lets others know you’re an expert.

But you need to engage them, bring them into your world and sell to them.

Otherwise, you don’t have a business, you just have lots of likes on social media.

🚨Find your voice and double down🚨
There’s nothing worse than a boring video.

A stilted podcast.

Or a poorly written article.

We’re all good (and bad) at different styles and types of content and it’s important that you consider that when marketing your business.

If you’re an introvert, posting every 10 minutes on Snapchat isn’t going to come across well.

If you’re shy on video, don’t worry about doing Facebook live.

Instead, pick 1 or 2 mediums of content and go 100% all in on them.

Make them your craft to perfect and ensure that you create content that people look forward to consuming.

🚨 Amplify rather duplicate 🚨

Once you find your voice, know your numbers and have a conversion mechanism, you can take your content and amplify it.

Don’t worry about creating something fresh for all your social media platforms.

Take your article and read it out –> podcast.

Post the whole thing on Facebook with an image.

Then put a stock image and logo over the audio –>> Youtube video.

Take an image from the article with a short snippet and post it on Instagram with a link in the bio.

Speak soon,
Jonny
