As you may know, I used to be an accountant.
2 and a half years ago, I quit and took the risk of working as an online coach.
As expected, pretty much everyone told me not to do it.
And fair enough!
It’s not exactly a common career path and there’s a LOT of uncertainty!
People now ask me what drove me to quit, what made me so sure that I needed to do something riskier and less predictable.
The answer was something that was confirmed to me this last weekend.
I met my girlfriend at the accountancy firm I used to work at and she still works there.
This time of year is CRAZY busy for her and as a result, she needed to go to the office both Saturday and Sunday.
Now, she’s very good at her job and frankly, she doesn’t mind doing that occasionally.
I clearly remember that feeling when I was asked to work a weekend or a late night.
I hated it.
I hated working longer than the minimum hours.
There’s no such thing as overtime in the world and so I saw no benefit in staying longer for no gain.
What struck me was that not everyone felt like that.
Some of my colleagues would stay late out of choice.
Do work on the weekends because they enjoyed the process.
It occured to me that at some point, if I continued down that path, I’d eventually be competing with them for a promotion or new job…
…and I’d lose.
Passion will always win.
When you actually LIKE what you do, there’s no such thing as clocking off at 5pm or leaving early as often as possible.
Why would you?!
At some level business and careers are a competition.
At some point, you compete with someone or something else.
And if your competition is more passionate about the mission and overall aim than you…you’ll lose.
When passion fuels your days, it’s only a matter of time before you overcome obstacles and problems.
Only a matter of time before you make progress.
By contrast, Yusef and I spent this weekend working on a new project in Propane…
…as you may have guessed, even though we worked all weekend, it didn’t at all FEEL like work.
The lesson is simple.
While moving online or even into the fitness industry may FEEL like a big risk and something you could fail in, if passion drives you, you’ll make it work.
