What can “The Martian” teach us about business?

I’ve been slowly working my way through my film collection, and one that I hadn’t seen since it came out (but loved) is "The Martian".

I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet, but the gist of the film is this:

Matt Damon and his crew land on Mars.

He gets left behind - they assume he's dead. They make several failed rescue attempts. But in the end, it’s not about how fancy the shuttle, planning and space suits are.

The final plan all comes down to perfect timing.

The same goes for business.

In business, timing is everything

The one crucial point people miss

As an online personal trainer, you’ll know that there’s a lot of noise to wade through online.

You’ll see tons of post telling you how to get X number of clients today.

But all of these miss one crucial point.

It doesn’t matter:

  • how perfect your logo is
  •
  • how pretty your website is
  •
  • how much you spend on ads.

What does matter in online client acquisition is this:

Presenting the right offer

to the right person

at the right time.

We all want sign ups now.

But that's not going to happen unless the timing is right.
